My Travel Diary: Exploring the Magic of Istanbul & Beyond

My Travel Diary: Exploring the Magic of Istanbul & Beyond

Before hopping on my long-awaited trip to Turkey, schedule a pre-travel health consultation—a simple step that brought huge peace of mind. Depending on where you’re headed in Turkey (especially rural areas, homestays, or adventurous activities), doctors may suggest:

  • Hepatitis A vaccine
  • Typhoid vaccine – especially for rural visits or stays with locals
  • Rabies vaccine – if you’ll be around animals frequently

These conversations are private, modern, and genuinely part of responsible, stress-free travel planning.

Visas & Tickets

Sort out the essentials early—flights, accommodation, and visa requirements.

Turkey’s visa rules vary depending on your nationality, so checking in advance saves a lot of last-minute scrambling.

Smart Packing for Istanbul, Turkey

Since my journey involved deserts, coastlines, bustling cities, and scenic adventures, I packed a few lifesavers:

  • Basic first-aid kit
  • Electrolytes & hydration tablets
  • Splints, bandages, and alcohol wipes
  • High-SPF sunscreen
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Goggles or a face covering for dunes/ATV ride
  • Gear for hot air balloon rides

And of course—preparation for long walks, treks, and navigating lively city crowds.

Dress Code for Places of Worship

Please be mindful of the dress code when visiting places of worship for both males and females.

  • For ladies: Full-body covering is required, including long dresses reaching close to ankle level. Tight-fitting clothing that reveals body contours is not permitted. Head and hair coverings are also required.
  • For males: Short pants and sleeveless shirts are not permitted. Short-sleeved shirts are acceptable.

Day 1: Bosphorus Night Magic

My first night was unforgettable. I joined the Mega Lüfer Yachts Bosphorus Dinner Cruise, complete with a full table-service dinner—Turkish appetizers, fish, meat, vegetarian options, fresh fruit, and dessert.

As the yacht glided along the shimmering water, I soaked in stunning views:

  • Maiden’s Tower
  • Galata Tower
  • Ortaköy Mosque
  • Bosphorus Bridges

The night sparkled even brighter with live entertainment—Turkish folk dances, belly dancing, Latin and Flamenco performances, and a lively DJ set. Truly the perfect welcome to Istanbul.

Day 2: A Walk Through History

  • Sultanahmet District

The heart of old Istanbul—every corner tells a story.
  • Hippodrome / Atmeydanı

Once the grand arena of Roman chariot races, the square still holds historical landmarks like the Egyptian Obelisk and the elegant German Fountain.
  • Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque

Built in the 6th century by Emperor Justinian, Hagia Sophia has shaped both Christian and Islamic worlds. Standing beneath its massive dome felt like touching history.
  • Blue Mosque

A masterpiece from the 1600s—its delicate architecture and blue Iznik tiles make it an absolute must-see.
  • Sultanahmet Square

Bustling, beautiful, and filled with postcard moments.
  • Grand Bazaar

One of the world’s largest and oldest covered markets—over 4,000 shops selling ceramics, leather, rugs, crafts, clothes, silver, gold, spices, and more.

    Prepare to haggle!
Great deals await, but watch out for knockoffs.

  • Bosphorus Cruise

Whether by public ferry or private tour, this is a serene way to see Istanbul’s European and Asian sides—plus Dolmabahçe Palace and Beylerbeyi Palace glimmering at the water’s edge.
  • Dolmabahçe Palace

Luxurious, grand, and filled with chandeliers, crystals, carpets, and stunning Bosphorus views. A palace that feels like a dream.
  • Taksim Square & Istiklal Street

The vibrant modern heart of Istanbul—embassies, cafes, pubs, art galleries, churches, and shops line this long, lively avenue.
  • Galata Tower

I viewed this iconic tower from the outside—long queues meant skipping the interior, but the guide’s storytelling made up for it!
  • Spice Market (Mısır Çarşısı)

An explosion of scent and color—spices, teas, Turkish delight, nuts, ceramics, and tiny treasures for every taste.
  • Cicek Pasaji (Flower Passage)

A charming blend of old Pera architecture and modern nightlife—a cozy stop for snacks, photos, and atmosphere.
  • Süleymaniye Mosque

Istanbul’s largest mosque—majestic inside and out. The terrace behind it offers some of the best views of the city.
  • Balat & Fener

Colorful backstreets, rich religious history, and a visit to the Church of St. George, home of the Ecumenical Patriarch since the 1600s.
  • Iron Church (St. Stephen Church)

A rare architectural gem—made entirely of prefabricated cast iron in the 19th century.
  • Pierre Loti Hill

A peaceful climb or cable-car ride to sweeping views of the Golden Horn. Perfect for sipping Turkish tea while watching the city below.
  • Chora Museum

Famous for its breathtaking mosaics and frescoes—one of the finest examples of Late Byzantine art.
