A Travel Diary from the Dominican Republic

A Travel Diary from the Dominican Republic

If you’re planning a tropical escape to the Dominican Republic, here’s everything you need to know—from pre-travel prep to breathtaking catamaran rides and hidden island gems. Plus, a few lessons I learned along the way to help you avoid any surprises.

Pre-Travel Consultation: Get Ready the Smart Way

Before boarding that flight to paradise, there are a few important health and travel steps to take:

  • Recommended Vaccinations

    These may include:

    • Hepatitis A & B
    • Malaria prophylaxis (depending on where you’re visiting)
    • Dukoral for traveler’s diarrhea
    • Typhoid Vaccination
  • Documents & Clearance

    • Passport and visa (if required for your nationality)
    • Online preclearance for entry and exit—this makes airport processes much smoother.
  • Essential Packing List

    These may include:

    • First-aid kit: bandages, painkillers, oral rehydration salts, dressing materials
    • Sun protection: high SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, sun hat
    • Comfortable footwear and beachwear
    • Hydration gear: reusable water bottles

Flight from Toronto to Punta Cana

Our flight from Toronto to Punta Cana was a smooth, straightforward 4.5-hour journey. In-flight, I made sure to:

  • Walk around periodically
  • Stay well-hydrated
  • Avoid too much alcohol (it’s tempting but not great at 30,000 feet!)
  • Pro Tip:

    • Prevent leg cramps and DVT by stretching regularly and wearing loose, comfy clothing.

Arrival in Punta Cana

We arrived at Punta Cana International Airport, where we were instantly greeted by the warm Caribbean breeze. Customs and immigration were fast and painless, and we quickly collected our luggage and headed to our car rental.

  • Car Rental Tip:

Before driving off, inspect the car carefully. Note any scratches or dents—take photos and make sure they’re documented. You might need a police report for any damage, even if you’re insured. The highway from the airport to the resort in Bávaro was well-marked and easy to navigate.

Resort Life in Bávaro

We stayed at a stunning all-inclusive resort—complete with pools, beach access, and every amenity you could imagine.

  • Safety Reminders:

    • Swim only where lifeguards are present, especially at night.
    • Stick to foods you’re familiar with, and avoid excessive alcohol.
    • Stay hydrated, especially in the sun.
    • Use sunscreen religiously—ocean and poolside sunbathing can sneak up on you!

All-inclusive resorts are great, but be mindful if you have health conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or high blood pressure. With unlimited food and drinks, it’s easy to overindulge.

Day Trip #1: Catamaran Ocean Tour

We took a day trip out on a catamaran, starting with a bus ride from the resort. The ride was comfortable, and the tour company was reputable and well-organized.

  • Ocean Tour Tips:

    • Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat
    • Bring a first-aid kit (basic supplies)
    • Use your life vest—especially during boat transfers
    • Be cautious of sea sickness, especially if you’re not used to being on the water
    • Don’t go overboard with the alcohol, especially in the sun

The tour had music, drinks, and dancing—tons of fun—but it’s important to know your limits, especially when swimming or snorkeling. Injuries can happen easily if you’re not careful on a moving boat.

Day Trip #2: Saona Island Adventure

On another day, we traveled to the breathtaking Saona Island—a real highlight of the trip.

  • Getting There:

    • A 1.5-hour bus ride through the Dominican countryside
    • Scenic views of sugarcane fields, cattle farms, and mango groves
    • Short speedboat transfer to the catamaran
  • On Saona Island:

      • Gorgeous white sandy beaches
      • A buffet lunch was served, but I recommend:
        • Avoiding uncooked foods and fruits
        • Sticking to bottled or carbonated drinks
        • Avoiding local brews or mysterious concoctions

There were also massage parlors on the beach, but I skipped them just to be safe.

  • Return Trip:

    • Speedboat ride back at sunset—stunning views!
    • Be seated and secure with your life vest properly fastened
    • Avoid standing or walking while the boat is moving

Last Day: Exploring & Departure

We spent our final day exploring local markets and driving around town. Returned the rental car without any issues, but again—take pictures of the car when returning it to avoid disputes over existing damage.

Then it was back to the airport for our return flight to Toronto, which, thankfully, was just as uneventful as the trip down.

Final Travel Tips

  • Don’t skip your pre-travel consultation—vaccines and medications can make all the difference.
  • Buy comprehensive travel insurance—it’s essential, not optional.
  • Stay hydrated, avoid sunburns, and go easy on alcohol.
  • Be cautious with food and drink, especially on excursions.
  • Follow safety rules on boats and beaches.

The Dominican Republic gave us unforgettable memories—from its friendly locals and stunning ocean views to the rhythms of Caribbean music on the water. With the right preparation and a few smart choices, it truly becomes a paradise worth exploring.
